Finding your way around

OK, you’ve logged in to the admin page. You’re looking at the “dashboard” which gives a summary view of the site config and content. By the time you finish this document you’ll understand what it’s all about!!

Note the menu down the left side of the page. This is the main menu, everything else on the screen will change depending which main menu option you’ve selected. The order of items on the main menu is arranged for “everyday” use, so for intial setup, we’ll jump around a bit and use menu options you don’t need for day to day operation. But this document will cover all the main options!

See how the menus have pop-out sub-menu. For example, if you click on the top one, “Posts”, you’ll find it pops open to reveal sub-categories like “Add New” and “Post Tags”. Each menu stays “popped” as the system assumes you’ll be using it again. If you’ve finished in a section, you can un-pop it by clicking the down-arrow on the top menu item – e.g. to close the “Posts” submenu, click the down-arrow next to “Posts”.

When all sub-menus are closed, you should see the following Menu Items:-

Dashboard – then Posts, Media, Links, Pages, Comments – then Appearance, Plugins, Users, Tools, Settings.

You can always return to the “start” page by clicking out the Dashboard menu and clicking on Dashboard. (Note – if you have more than one site on you account, make sure before you proceed that you’re working on the correct site – the top banner should say the site name – if not, use MySites to choose the right site.)

Now we can move on to Personal Settings.
